Midfielder fires Manchester United warning as Aston Villa look to final day showdown
Amadou Onana has warned Villa can’t afford to take Manchester United lightly in next Sunday’s last-day showdown.
Villa will head to Old Trafford with their Champions League hopes still very much alive, to face the worst United team in half a century.
Ruben Amorim’s squad, who first face Tottenham in Wednesday’s Europa League final, are the first United team to go winless in eight league matches since 1990 and are languishing 16th in the table.
Wolves, Brentford and West Ham have all won at Old Trafford in recent weeks but while Villa will head into the match as favourites, Onana says they won’t take anything for granted on a ground where as a club they have traditionally struggled.
The Belgium international said: “Manchester United is still Manchester United. It is a great group of players. They might be in a bad phase right now but it is still a strong team.
“We need to be ready, definitely and not under-estimate them at all.”
Friday’s 2-0 win over Tottenham saw Villa climb into the Premier League top five but destiny is not yet in their own hands, with Manchester City having the chance to jump back over them in the table should they avoid defeat against Bournemouth on Tuesday.
“It’s not in our hands but all we can do is win,” said Onana. “You can be pretty sure that we're gonna go out there and just give it all to win.
“It's not a secret for anyone. we want to play Champions League again - two years in a row.
“We’re in Europe already but Champions League is something special, something different, so we wanna reach that target, you know? And make it a habit.”
Friday’s win was Villa’s 32nd in all competitions this season, breaking a club record for total victories in a top flight campaign.
The team has also set a new benchmark of 18 straight unbeaten home Premier League matches, beating the previous best figure set earlier in Emery’s reign.
Ezri Konsa and Boubacar Kamara scored the second half goals to earn their eighth win in the last nine league matches.
Onana said: “Obviously, we knew that he were going to need a win at Villa Park.
“We've been really strong at home, so, yeah, we were willing to come out and give our best.
“That’s done, but we got one more to go, so we’re definitely focused on that.
“I didn't know about the records but we’ve got to keep it going. I'm hungry for more and more. and we’re capable of more so, we gotta keep it going
“This is a special team, with a lot of great players.
“You have the starting 11, but even the players on the bench, they could all start and we keep each other on our toes - you have to be on your best game to start week week out. We’ve got healthy competition and that’s the result.”
