It had been a rollercoaster five days but the Saddlers' 25-year wait for a return to the Second Division was finally over and the departing David Kelly was the hero.
Kelly had been outstanding all season. Prior to the play-offs, the former Republic of Ireland international had hit 23 goals to propel Walsall to within a whisker of automatic promotion.
In the end they had to settle for a place in the play-offs and Kelly would once again play an instrumental role.
After scoring twice in a 3-1 win over Notts County in the first leg of the semi-final, Kelly would repeat the feat in a victory by the same score-line against Bristol City at Ashton Gate.
His form had peaked the interest of the biggest clubs in the country. Sir Alex Ferguson had cast his eye over the Saddlers' prolific No 10 while the likes of Liverpool, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur among others were beginning to form an orderly queue.
