Aston Villa boss pays tribute to 'fantastic' goalkeeper as summer exit looms

Unai Emery has paid tribute to “fantastic guy” Robin Olsen with the goalkeeper expected to depart Villa this summer.

The 35-year-old Sweden international is expected to join Malmo when his contract expires at the end of June.

Olsen has made just 21 appearances since initially joining on loan from Roma three years ago, playing the role of understudy to No.1 Emi Martinez.

But Emery says the “unselfish” shot-stopper has played a key role behind the scenes in establishing a strong dressing room culture.

He said: “Especially with Robin Olsen, I respect him - before, now, and for his future - as a really amazing man and professional.

“The respect for him in the dressing room, from the players and myself as a coach, is massive. He is a fantastic guy. He always helps us when we need him, and he’s always positive with his team-mates.”

Olsen’s most recent appearance came in April 1-0 win at Brentford, just the second clean sheet he has kept since joining Villa.

His exit will leave Australia international Joe Gauci as the primary back-up to Martinez, though it is likely Villa will look to further strengthen their goalkeeping department during the summer.

Emery continued: “He’s an example in every way, and the message he constantly sends in the dressing room is to think of others, not be selfish.

“He is a really great, great man - a great, great man and a great, great goalkeeper.

“We’ll focus on tomorrow, and whatever happens after the season, I’ll have respect especially for him.”
