Destiny out of their hands
Walsall occupied top spot for 119 days and had spent seven months nestled in the automatic promotion places prior to their 2-2 draw against Harrogate Town on Easter Monday.
They had a golden opportunity to move back into third but capitulated once again in a 1-0 defeat against Accrington Stanley at Bescot on Saturday.
Unless there is one final twist in the promotion plot, Walsall face the dreaded lottery of the play-offs and we all fear how that could end.
If Bradford City beat Fleetwood Town at Valley Parade then Walsall will be consigned to the play-offs, which was simply unthinkable when they boasted a 12-point lead at the top in January.
