It was inconceivable heading into the Christmas period the club would end the season between ninth and 11th, scrapping to avoid a poorest finish in a generation.

But Carlos Corberan's damaging departure and the failed appointment of Tony Mowbray has left the Baggies licking their wounds until the end.

Here is the latest debrief after the penultimate game of the season ended in stalemate at relegated Cardiff.

Travel sickness misery ends

Albion's miserable away record is certainly something the new head coach needs to address sharpish.

The Baggies have been largely formidable at their Hawthorns home, as would be expected in the Championship, in recent years.

Away fixtures are seldom a guaranteed jolly, but this season's return of just four wins and 23 points from 23 games on their travels is feeble. It is 15 points fewer than the home record with a Black Country finale this weekend. The home record has not been good enough either this term, mostly due to draws.

Carlos Corberan, for his achievements at the club, never quite clicked with a consistent winning away formula. It is no easy task, but the pathetic record of one away win since September is a large parts of the failed play-off push.

Those that travel thousands of miles each season deserve more.
