Brunt was handed the reigns while the festive search for Carlos Corberan's successor took place back in December and January.

He stepped back after Tony Mowbray arrived, while his former team mate and fellow Baggies hero Morrison joined the coaching staff.

Now with Mowbray gone after a rotten run of results, Morrison has been thrust into the first team limelight, tasked with taking the side for the final two games of the campaign.

Morrison becomes the ninth former Baggie to take temporary charge of the club and the 21st caretaker manager the club has had in its history.

Here is a look over how the other interim bosses and within it the eight former Baggies who have been handed the role in the past:

1975 - Brian Whitehouse

The former Albion forward began his career with the club back in 1955, going on to score 13 goals in 37 games. As a player he would go on to play for the likes of Norwich, Wrexham, Crystal Palace, Charlton and Leyton Orient, before going into coaching.

In 1975, following Don Howe's Albion exit, he took charge of three games on a temporary basis and picked up two victories, and during that time handed an Albion debut to an 18-year-old Bryan Robson.

He would later go on to be a coach at Manchester United.

1977/78 - John Wile

The Albion legend, who played more than 600 games for the Baggies, was drafted in as an interim manager during his playing days.

Following Ronnie Allen's exit in 1977, he had a four game spell in charge before Ron Atkinson arrived for his first stint at The Hawthorns.

John Wile ended up as managing director of Albion . .

After his Albion days came to an end, Wile moved to Peterborough United as a player manager, before later making the switch back to Albion as the club's manager director.

1988 - Brian Talbot

The former England international, who made over 250 appearances for Arsenal, took over from Atkinson following his second spell at the club.

And after four wins from four games, he landed himself the job.

However, his permanent stint was less successful. After the infamous 4-2 defeat to non-league Woking in the 1990/91 season he was sacked, and that season ended in relegation to the Third Division.

1991 - Stuart Pearson

The former Manchester United and West Ham striker served as Talbot's assistant, before taking charge of six games before the appointment of Bobby Gould.

The ex-England man remained at Albion until 1992 before departing and joining Bradford City.

1997 - Arthur Mann

The Scottish defender, who played for the likes of Man City and Notts County during his career, was tasked with the interim jobs for three games following Alan Buckley's dismissal.

He had arrived at Albion with Buckley, with the pair having worked together at Grimsby Town.

Mann tragically passed away at the age of just 51 in February 1999, in an industrial accident at a Birmingham factory.

1997 - Richie Barker

The former striker, who was Albion's chief scout, stepped into the dugout for just one game after the departure of Ray Hartford, winning his only game in charge.

1997 - John Trewick

After Barker's single game, the former Albion midfielder took charge for two games.

Well known to Albion fans for his successful six year playing career in the 1970s, Trewick, who had since 1993 been a youth coach at the club, could only oversee two defeats.

Dennis Smith arrived and he went back to his youth coaching role, achieving much success with the club's young talents before he let and joined Derby in 2001.

July 1999 - Cyrille Regis & John Gorman

The Albion legend and ex-Spurs defender Gorman were handed the interim role in the summer of 1999 - but never took charge of a match.

After Smith's departure, Brian Little arrived to take over before the start of the new campaign

2000 - Cyrille Regis & Allan Evans

Regis did take charge of one game the following year alongside ex Villa man Allan Evans.

One win from one game saw Regis with a 100 per cent record in the Albion dugout. They stepped aside when Gary Megson was handed the job.

2004 - Frank Burrows

Assistant to Megson through two promotion winning campaigns and the first Premier League season, Burrows had to hold the fort after Megson was axed in 2004. He managed a draw and a defeat from his two games before Bryan Robson was appointed.

2006 - Nigel Pearson

Another assistant to step into the breach, Pearson had worked alongside Robson before taking over for four games. He achieved three wins, before stepping down and going on to have a successful career with a number of clubs.

2006 - Craig Shakespeare

After Pearson left, Albion needed someone to remain in charge before Tony Mowbray arrived. Former midfielder Shakespeare, who worked as an academy coach, stepped up and won his only game in charge.

Shakespeare would go on to develop a big reputation in the game as a top coach, working in the Premier League on a number of occasions before his death in August 2024 following a battle with cancer.

2011 - Michael Appleton

Another who began his coaching journey on the back of his Baggies playing days, Appleton had been handed a job at Albion after his career was prematurely cut short by injury.

Michael Appleton worked under Roy Hodgson at the Baggies.

He served as a coach under Roberto Di Matteo before taking one game in the Premier League before Roy Hodgson arrived.

However, after serving in various managerial and assistant roles he returned to Albion in April 2019 as an assistant to interim boss Jimmy Shan. He was then handed the under 23s job before departing soon after for Lincoln City.

2013/14 - Keith Downing

The former Wolves man and well respected coach had six games in charge before the appointed of Pepe Mel in January 2024.

His six games saw him pick up one win and three draws, and he remained on the coaching staff under the Spaniard.

2014 - Rob Kelly

Another assistant who stepped up, the former Wolves was number two to Alan Irvine, and picked up a draw from his game in the dugout before Tony Pulis arrived.

2017 - Gary Megson

Only one or two to serve as both manager and interim, Megson came back into football as a number two to Pulis in 2017.

He was then thrust back into the main role after Pulis' exit, picking up impressive draws against Spurs and Newcastle.

Many were calling for him to be given the job, but he left after the club brought in Alan Pardew.

Pulis later told the Express & Star's Baggies Broadcast podcast, had Albion left Megson in charge they would have avoided relegation from the Premier League.

2019 - Jimmy Shan

The longest caretaker in the club's history was Shan, who stepped up from first team coach to interim manager after the club sacked Darren Moore 12 games from the end of the season in 2019.

But when the club failed to appoint a permanent successor to Moore, Shan remained in charge. assisted by former players Appleton and Steven Reid.

He guided Albion to seven wins from 12 games and secured a play-off spot, before a heartbreaking semi-final penalty shoot-out defeat against Aston Villa.

He departed that summer and after spells in non-league, he is currently a youth team coach at Villa.

2022 - Richard Beale

The current under 21s boss had a three game spell in 2022 after Steve Bruce was sacked.

One win and two defeats followed, before Carlos Corberan arrived and he went back to his old job.

2024/25 - Chris Brunt

Another club legend to step into the breach. Brunt, who had been a coach and a loan's manager after his career ended, was fired into the spotlight after Corberan's Christmas Eve departure earlier this season.

Brunt would oversee one win and three draws from six games, before his former boss Mowbray arrived to take over.

2025 - James Morrison

Morrison becomes the latest former Baggie to take charge of the side - and the second of the season.

Another who ended his playing days and began coaching at Albion, in the youth set up before working under various other Baggies bosses.

He was brought back into the first team fold under Mowbray, alongside Boaz Myhill.
