Villa are now seven points clear of Crystal Palace, who are in the relegation zone, thanks to goals from Anna Patten and Ebony Salmon putting them 2-0 ahead.

Tottenham’s Jessica Naz and Ella Morris equalised after the hour-mark, after which the match-winner was brought on by manager Natalia Arroyo.

Arroyo said: “An important win. Again, I think a good performance from the team. Not during the 90 minutes because it’s difficult, but the first half was very good.

“The way we were able to stop them, or able to stop their momentum, in my opinion, makes me say that we deserved this win.

“But again, it’s a win in the last minute and pushing. With Kirsty’s goal, I’m happy for her. She’s asking me to start, but I make my decisions and I’m happy that we’re able to understand the different moments of the game.

It’s time to celebrate and enjoy this moment, because we had a lot of bad moments during the season.”

The villains have now got consecutive wins for the first time this season as they look ahead to next Wednesday’s game against title-chasing Arsenal (6pm).

Birmingham City came from behind against fourth-placed Durham to win 3-1, and are now only two points off London City Lionesses in the Women’s Championship top spot.

Simone Magill bagged a brace to put Blues ahead, before Emily Van Egmond got her first goal for the club with four minutes left to play.

The two-point gap means City need a win against Lionesses in their final match of the season to secure promotion to the Super League.

Already-relegated Stourbridge lost their penultimate game of the National League Northern Premier Division season against league-leaders Nottingham Forest 4-0.

Sophie Domingo, Holly Manders, Hollie Olding and Charlie Wellings all scored for Forest, while second-placed Wolves now need to overturn a goal difference of 14 and hope Forest lose on the final game of the season to take the top spot.
