The Brazilian forward has starred for Wolves this season with 14 Premier League games to his name, but has also earned headlines for the wrong reasons with two suspensions amid disciplinary concerns.

Cunha signed a new Wolves deal in January to ensure he did not move during the club’s relegation battle and that contract included a £62.5million release clause.

The 25-year-old is expected to leave this summer with a number of clubs targeting his signature and the player himself has hinted at a move so that he can fight for titles and other honours.

After Wolves beat United 1-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday, Ruben Amorim’s side have now opened talks with Cunha’s representatives about a summer move.

Arsenal and Nottingham Forest are also among several sides that are keen on the forward but United are eager to steal a march on their rivals by making early contact with Cunha’s team.

If talks remain positive and personal terms can be agreed, then United would simply need to activate the release clause with Wolves to make a summer transfer a reality.

The summer transfer window will open early this year between June 1 and June 10 due to ‘an exceptional registration period for the expanded Club World Cup’.

It will then open again from June 16 before closing on September 1.

It remains to be seen if a move to United materialises, but Cunha is certainly likely to depart Wolves regardless at the end of the season.
