The out of sorts forward was ousted at Old Trafford - and arrived at Villa in an attempt to regain an England place.

He has done that with a series of top displays, the latest coming as he led the line in Villa's 3-2 win over PSG in the last eight of the Champions League on Tuesday evening.

He played a hand in two of the goals as Villa came up just short of progressing to the semi-finals.

After the game, Unai Emery was asked about whether he has a desire to keep Rashford beyond the end of his loan spell.

The Villa boss said: "It is difficult to plan now.

"Of course, he is feeling better, he played a fantastic match today, he is very happy, we are very happy, we are happy with him and he is happy with us and that is the most important thing.

"We are in a process we have, and it depends on circumstances now coming in the next weeks and the next year as well."

Elsewhere, former Aston Villa man Ashley Young, who was at United as Rashford emerged from the club's academy, dropped a hint on TNT Sports that may excite Villa fans.

He insisted that the England man just wants to play, and he is being given that chance at Villa Park.

He said: ""He is only on loan.

"He could go back, but Marcus just wants to play football.

"He has come on loan and done so well, is loved by the manager, has tasted Champions League, he has a semi-final in the FA Cup, he has his confidence back.

"Maybe he might be pushing to get to a club like Villa, with the vision that Unai Emery and the owners have.

"He may go to United and say, let me go and restart, reboot. That is what he needed when he came here on loan.

"It is down to Man United, but I think he might be looking to come here."
