Winger Fellows, 21, was at his creative best to register two assists - 13 has clear standalone leader in the Championship in that department - against Watford on Saturday.

It was just the second game in which the academy graduate has laid on goals under Mowbray and in this calendar year after dips in form which the head coach pointed to inconsistency, a trait wingers can generally suffer from.

Mowbray last week spoke to wingers Fellows and Mikey Johnston - who netted the killer second against the Hornets - in a bid to push them on. His message to Fellows was to stick to the model that turned the Birmingham-born wideman from youth hopeful into one of the division's hottest prospects.

On Monday night Fellows was named the club's young player of the season for the second campaign in succession.

"I think it's fair that generally all wingers are inconsistent. If anybody's got criticism of selection, if they look back at games - as I do every game - and see inconsistency of wide players," Mowbray said.

"Sometimes Fellows and Johnston haven't done it for long spells. They keep running down blind alleys, keep giving the ball away, don't get past their man.

"It was about giving them some confidence and belief. I said to them this week 'I don't care if you lose the ball but I do care if you never, ever attack the full-back'.

"Tom keeps driving inside the full-back on his left foot - where are you going? The goal is that way (points), this is where we're trying to go.

"So every time you get it, face up the full-back and take him on. He's started doing it. That's what he's about, that's his game."

Fellows, who burst on to the scene last season, has started in 31 of Albion's 42 Championship games this term. He has appeared from the bench in 10 others. Johnston has started 23.

Saturday's win over Watford was an eighth start for Fellows in 15 games under Mowbray. The winger offered very bright cameos in defeats against Sunderland and Bristol City to show he was well worth a recall and delivered two assists.

Mowbray said of Fellows: "He can get to the Premier League - hopefully with this club of course - if he can eliminate full-backs and put the ball in the box. He's a special talent.

"I'm not sure which is his best foot. He needs loving and encouragement. My job is try to win matches, we've not done successfully in the last 10 days but we got back to winning ways.

"Thankfully Tom wasn't suffering confidence loss, he was doing what he does best and thankfully we found a way to win."

No players aged under 21 in Europe's top five main division's has more assists than Fellows. Barcelona and Bayer Leverkusen stars Lamine Yamal and Florian Wirtz trail in his wake.
