Rugby union round-up: Lichfield clinch the title in a thrilling finale
Lichfield fought back from behind to edge out Old Saltleians 31-26 and win the Regional Two Midlands North title with minutes to spare, writes Dan Hickey.
They were pushed until the final game week by Dronfield, who finished the season with an identical record of 20 wins, however bonus points meant Lichfield end the campaign with 99 points, four ahead of second place.
Ben Bourne opened the tries for Lichfield, however, the visitors struck back and Saltleians took a 12-5 lead on the 11th minute.
Paul Maxwell-Keys restored the balance before the break, with Adam Spinner converting to level 12-12, before Saltleians touched down again. Lich went into half-time second in the division, as title-challengers Dronfield comfortably led in their game.
The hosts struggled to get into a rhythm going into the final quarter, before Freddie Wilson touched down on 63 minutes. Maxwell-Keys and Rhys Davies then added tries – both converted by Josh Butler.
Walsall also finished the season strong, with a 50-25 demolition at home to fourth-placed rivals West Bridgford means the hosts finish as leaders of the chasing pack.
Lucas Cotterell touched down twice and Ben Pitt, Quade Boal, Max Vaughan and Kyle Reid added to the score.
Stourbridge ended their impressive Regional One Midlands edging out Long Eaton 40-38 away, despite at one point holding a 40-17 lead.
Dan Johnson (two), Ryan Wainwright, Will Webb, Fin Hayward and Rowan Dickinson touched down for Stourbridge, who had already confirmed second place.
Dudley Kingswinford did not quite close out the season as they would have hoped, losing 30-13 to fifth-placed Bridgnorth.
Despite a try from Adam Dainty, DK finished the season third from bottom.
Old Halesonians remained eighth in Regional Two Midlands West after a final-day loss to Cheltenham. They lost 35-13 away despite tries from Luke Penn and Sam Herrington.
Burntwood beat visitors Kidderminster 31-20 in Counties One Midlands West (North), meaning Kidderminster slipped to eighth on the last day.
The home side were already confirmed to finish second, but won thanks to Kian Carter, Hal Gozukucuk, Josh Canning, Rob Jones and Tom Shorrock all touching down. Kidderminster’s Henry Humphrey, Harry Lees and Jake Perks added to the scoreline.
Third-bottom Willenhall lost 34-12 at Newcastle, second-bottom Stafford lost 37-10 to Spartans and, at the foot of the table, Wolverhampton lost 36-20 to Veseyans.
Stourbridge Lions rounded off their title-winning season with a win against Counties Two Midlands West (West) rivals Walsall Seconds. The 65-7 scoreline meant Walsall finished ninth.
