The gifted creative midfielder was a high-profile winter transfer window addition from Italian side Roma and caught the eye in his early games for the Black Cats.

But the Frenchman, 25, injured his hamstring against Hull in February and has subsequently missed five games for promotion-pushing Sunderland.

Asked about Le Fee's return, boss Regis Le Bris said:  “Yeah. That should be the case. We will try to be more cautious. The situation was a bit different (prior to the injury) because at that time we were still in the title race and two wingers were injured and the core of the team was really short, but now it’s a bit different.

“With Enzo, we will have another option, a different style of play, maybe different connections; maybe we can open the rotation of the midfield, for example."

Sunderland were in impressive form without Le Fee having lost just one of the last five games, winning three.

Youngsters Romaine Mundle and Tommy Watson have been leaned on in the January recruit's absence. The Black Cats boast some eye-catching youthful talent with Jobe Bellingham and Chris Rigg among them.

Winger and academy graduate Watson, 18, this week sealed a summer move to Premier League Brighton for £10million.

Twelve-goal French striker William Isidor made his loan from Russia side Zenit permanent in the January window.

Sunderland have spent much of the season, boss Le Bris's first in English football, in fourth in the Championship.

They trail Burnley, in third, by nine points but have a 13-point buffer to fifth-placed Coventry. The Baggies are two points further back.

The Black Cats went unbeaten throughout January and half of February before consecutive defeats against Leeds and Sunderland. Le Bris's side have responded admirably once more, though, on their current run.

Sunderland have of late struggled with available in their defence with Dennis Cirkin, Dan Ballard, Aji Alese, Leo Hjelde, Jenson Seelt and Niall Huggins among those sidelined. Experienced midfielder Alan Browne deputised at right-back in last weekend's 1-0 win over Millwall, with Trai Hume shuffling to the left.
