West Brom stresses the only thing that matters after his side's win

Albion boss Tony Mowbray insisted victory - and not the manner of it - was all that matters as his side showed a stomach for the scrap for play-offs.

The sixth-placed Baggies dug in with 10 men to claim a spirited three points against QPR at The Hawthorns having seen Darnell Furlong dismissed in first-half stoppage time.

Boss Mowbray revealed his pride afterwards as his troops kickstarted a three-match week with a "Herculean" effort to keep out the Rs.

The head coach added that the league table only features wins, draws and losses and does not outline the manner of those tallies and at this stage of a play-off race the bottom line is all that mattes.

Asked about clocking up a fourth home win in five, Mowbray replied: "I'm not big on stats! I'd been told we'd had no wins away but I thought we'd been doing quite well because we'd drawn two of them (out of four)!

"You play with 10 men for 50 minutes or 60 minutes and the result is still the result. Nobody ever says 'you played that game with 10 men and did really well to get a draw'.

"No (it's not written on the league table), the result is the result, and that's why it's extra pleasing to win a game to play with 10 men for so long. The three points are all that matter at the end of the day."

Adam Armstrong's penalty seven minutes before the interval was ultimately the difference between the sides as Albion made it seven points from nine.

Hoops boss Marti Cifuentes was annoyed by his side's lack of creativity but credited Albion's defensive second-half display. QPR lost ground on their outside chance of a late push towards the top six.

The Baggies head to automatic promotion-hunting Burnley on Tuesday night for a stern test potentially without key regular Furlong.

The right-back will serve a three-match ban unless Albion are successful with the appeal against the suspension the club plan to lodge. It remains unclear how long the process of a successful appeal could take with the Football Association. Mason Holgate impressed in Furlong's place in the second period.
