Right-back Furlong was dismissed in first-half stoppage time during Saturday's 1-0 home victory over Queens Park Rangers.
The experienced defender was given his marching orders by referee Adam Herczeg after officials believed he had swung or lifted an arm into the face of visiting winger Koki Saito near to the dugouts at The Hawthorns.
Tony Mowbray's men held on for the 1-0 win but Furlong's red card would see the full-back suspended for three fixtures, beginning at Burnley before a home clash against Hull on Saturday and trip to Norwich immediately after the international break.
Head coach Mowbray told the Express & Star after Saturday's victory the club will appeal the suspension for Furlong as the Baggies boss, standing right next to the incident, believed it was a "really harsh" decision with both players contesting a shoulder barge.
Immediate replays were inconclusive as it was an off the ball incident.
Albion confirmed on Monday they have appealed to the Football Association against the decision on grounds of a wrongful dismissal.
The club are hopeful to learn of the appeal's outcome prior to the clash at Turf Moor on Tuesday night.
