Aaron Rai falls just short of second PGA Tour victory
Aaron Rai bogeyed two of the final three holes as he came up just short of his second victory on the PGA Tour.
The Wolverhampton-born former Shropshire & Herefordshire junior topped the leaderboard during the final day of the Mexico Open at Vidanta Vallarta, almost making a sensational albatross.
But dropped shots on the 16th and the 17th cost him the chance to be in a play-off with Aldrich Potgieter and eventual champion Brian Campbell, who took the title on the second play-off hole.
Rai, 29, birdied the last to finish tied for fourth - two shots behind the leading mark of 20-under-par - as he pocketed just shy of £250,000.
Earlier in his round, he almost made a sensational albatross at the par-five sixth hole as his 282-yard approach with a three wood rolled mere centimetres past the hole.
Winner Campbell is now exempt into The Players Championship, The Masters and the US PGA Championship after taking home a prize cheque of almost £1million.
Rai, who is up to 24 in the world rankings, has already qualified for all four majors this season, as well as The Players Championship.
