The Paris St-Germain loanee scored his first goals for Unai Emery’s team as they came from behind to beat Chelsea and boost their hopes of a top-five finish.

Victory snapped a five-match winless run in the league for Villa, who are up to seventh in the table and now go to Crystal Palace on Tuesday night.

Asensio told Sky Sports: “We knew today was important and we had to win. And we did. So I am very happy.

“We have to continue. On Tuesday, we have another match. The mentality we need to have is to win every match.

"We are working hard. We have new team-mates. We are building something new. We are in the right way and we have to keep working."

Chelsea got off to a flyer when Enzo Fernandez put them into an eighth-minute lead but Asensio levelled when he turned home Marcus Rashford’s cross, the goal eventually awarded by VAR after being flagged for offside.

The same combination then delivered Villa’s 89th minute winner, Rashford delivering the cross which Asensio volleyed home, the ball slipping through the hands of goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen.

"I am so happy,” said Asensio. “The performance from the team was incredible. The atmosphere was top.

“I want to thank the fans for the effort that we do together. We need to continue but the team is in the right way. I am very happy for my first goals and for the win.

"I looked to Marcus and he told me that he was not offside (for the first goal). I trust him. He told me that it was not offside.

"We know all the qualities of Marcus. He helps us a lot and thank you also to him for the two assists."
