FA Cup: Wolves Women 0 Manchester United Women 6 - Report
Wolves Women were knocked out of the FA Cup with a fifth round loss to Super League side Manchester United.
In front of a record-breaking 5,008 attendance for a Wolves Women game, the hosts came out to a loud atmosphere at Telford’s SEAH Stadium.
But the visitors almost spoiled the party early on when Leah Galton’s low cross found Ella Toone and her first-time effort blazed just wide of the post after coming through a crowd of players.
Moments later, Grace Clinton took aim but Bec Thomas was equal to it with an excellent save.
Toone then found Clinton with a defence-splitting pass and she looked set to put United ahead, until Anna Morphet made a late and impressive sliding challenge.
The skipper then made a similar block to deny Melvine Malard, but shortly after United took the lead.
A low cross from the right found Elisabeth Terland unmarked at the far post, who tapped home to give United a deserved lead.
A corner routine almost doubled their advantage but Malard’s audacious flick was over the bar.
That second goal then came in the 37th minute when Galton looked set to cross down the left, but instead caught Wolves out with a curled shot towards the near post.
Malard missed from close range and failed to add a third as Wolves entered the break trailing 2-0.
Just seven minutes into the second half the game was gone for Wolves when Aoife Mannion was free from close range to head into the back of the net.
Only three minutes later United had a fourth when a seemingly harmless Toone effort from distance went under goalkeeper Thomas.
Once Wolves settled they were defending much better, but still could not hold onto the ball or have any outlet up front, as Clinton rattled the crossbar with an effort inside the box.
Millie Turner had the ball in the back of the net but was flagged offside, as United dominated the latter stages of the game.
Mared Griffiths added a late fifth after Thomas spilled the ball in the box and the United player pounced on it.
The substitute then scored her second and United’s sixth as the ball again went through goalkeeper Thomas, as tier three Wolves fell to a 6-0 defeat to the cup holders.
