The Baggies launched a late raid for the prolific St Mary's hitman when they discovered at 10pm on Monday, an hour before the transfer deadline, the striker was available for loan.

It had previously seemed Armstrong, 27, was out of Albion's price range for a temporary deal until the end of the season.

Albion submitted the paperwork for the switch on time and the loan deal is in the hands of the EFL, who have to rubber-stamp the move as per standard practice.

It means a nervy overnight wait for the Baggies in the hunt for what would be a dramatic, last-gasp statement signing to once again link up boss Tony Mowbray with prolific Championship marksman Armstrong. The pair have worked together at Coventry and Blackburn.

The striker was scourge of Albion last season as he bagged two goals in the play-off semi-final second leg against the Baggies. He scored the winner in the final against Leeds at Wembley.

But Armstrong has struggled for gametime in the top flight this term and Albion launched a late bid. Armstrong's addition would be a fourth and final addition of the window.
