Head coach Mowbray's return to The Hawthorns home dugout brought an inspired victory over a struggling and rotated Portsmouth side.

The Baggies put their visitors to the sword with five goals in a half hour blitz either side of half-time - as Diangana continued his improved recent form with two goals and two assists.

Mowbray has talked up Diangana in the media this week and revealed after the win he held one-on-one talks with the attacker, in which Mowbray came away feeling the former West Ham man's determination to pitch in to help Albion improve in the final third.

"I had my one-on-one with Grady this week and didn't realise how intelligent he was, how articulate he was, he speaks four or five languages," said Mowbray, who has been busy getting to know the squad he inherited.

"He wants to get better in training every day, he wants a coach to test him, it's so refreshing to listen to him talk. He's always been a player when I came with Blackburn or Sunderland, he was always the danger, we always had to stop him.

"He can dance on the ball, look-away passes, slip strikers in, he can score himself.
