The Premier League hosts cantered to a dominant victory in the third round after the managerless Baggies gave an early scare with recalled loan defender Caleb Taylor's first Albion goal.

Andoni Iraola's Bournemouth - for who six changes to his side was fewer than Albion's seven - turned the scoreline on its head and raced into a 3-1 half-time lead through Dango Ouattara's double after Justin Kluivert's equaliser.

Antoine Semenyo rifled in seconds after half-time, at which point the Baggies responded with changes to stem the tide. Cherries substitute Daniel Jebbison added a fifth in stoppage time.

The Baggies - for a final time under Chris Brunt and Damia Abella's interim management with Swiss coach Raphael Wicky set to be appointed - were good value for their lead in half hour but the hosts showed their speed and class. Two goals in seven minutes before the break killed the tie.

Some Albion heads dropped by that stage as basic tracking lacked in spells but the visitors were able to rally of sorts as the hosts stepped off the gas as the second half wore on.

Albion settled into the contest admirably. Tom Fellows - whose first Baggies start was just a year ago at this stage of the competition against Aldershot - was busy on the right flank.

Fellows' creativity led to the tie's first chance. The winger latched on to Karlan Grant's through pass and his deep cross picked out the run of loan midfielder Uros Racic, but the Serb skewed his left-footed volley poorly.

Albion and Taylor at the back in particular were comfortable and confident in possession despite the odd burst from their hosts.

It was no surprise when the Baggies opened the scoring on 14 minutes.

It came from a free-kick from the right. John Swift's delivery was on the money and attacked by Grady Diangana. The diminutive Diangana powered a header on to Kepa Arrizabalaga's crossbar, before up rose giant centre-back Taylor to plant a header into the corner for his first Baggies goal.

It was a dream lead for the managerless Baggies and they were good value for it for 25 minutes.

Kluivert curled a dangerous strike narrowly wide from range but made no mistake no mistake from much closer out just before half hour.

Home skipper David Brooks, chief tormenter all afternoon, curled in a delicious inswinging cross that was heading for the far corner before stand-in goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith's fingertip.

Wildsmith did well but in stormed Kluivert to lift into the roof of the net for parity.

Bournemouth sensed an opportunity to go for the jugular following the early scare and delivered on it. Brooks was played in on goal but drew a fine full-stretched save from summer signing Wildsmith.

The pressure kept coming and the Cherries led 10 minutes before the break. Some quality from Kluivert and Ouattara told again but Albion and Mason Holgate were too passive.

Kluivert's clever pass sent Ouattara clear down the left side of the box, beyond Holgate. The Burkina Faso international kept his composure and slid in a low finish under Wildsmith from the angle.

Albion showed some ambition at 2-1 down but could not quite make half-time just one goal behind.

A Baggies corner was ruthlessly countered and Brooks fed Ouattara for a composed finish. Albion's recovery lacked some intensity as the Cherries coasted through.

Instructions from Brunt and Abella may have been to keep things tight after the interval but things unravelled further as Brooks fed Semenyo to score 90 seconds after the latter's introduction.

Down the other end Racic, who struggled badly, sliced wide after a neat Diangana pass.

An implosion looked on the cards and the interim team acted swiftly to stem the flow with Jayson Molumby and Ousmane Diakite's introduction.

The changes worked and helped the Baggies find their feet. Some further alterations with Jed Wallace and Mikey Johnston added helped bring a bit more energy to the final third.

Bournemouth appeared to have settled on four - though Taylor had to clear off the line from Ouattara. Down the other end Wallace tested Kepa from range and Molumby opted to not shoot from Johnston's neat cross. Iraola's men should have capitalised seconds later when two-on-one.

Home sub Jebbison slid in a fifth into stoppage time to ensure a reflection of the Cherries' dominance.
