Johnson scored a dramatic 97th-minute equaliser to notch his 25th goal for the club and cancel out Tyler Sackey's second half opener for Reading.

The 31-year-old went on to convert his spot-kick as Sam Hornby made two saves in a 4-2 shoot-out victory to book Walsall's place in the round of 16 for the first time since 2019.

And Johnson hopes his performances in the EFL Trophy can eventually propel him into contention for a regular first team place.
