New Hednesford Town boss Gavin Hurren hailed a "footballing masterclass" from his side who thrashed Clitheroe on Tuesday night - scoring eight goals.

Hurren was jumping for joy as the Pitmen romped to victory in his first match in charge at Keys Park since his appointment as manager last week.

The former Pitmen player maintained his winning start in the role, adding to victory at Trafford last Saturday, and saw Hednesford to seventh in the Northern One West - two points adrift of the play-offs.

Dan Sparkes' sublime free-kick opened the scoring before Dominic McHale grabbed two, and Manny Duku netted Hednesford's final goal and eighth in additional time.

The Pitmen were set for a clean sheet too until skipper Elliot Johnson, who had enjoyed a sterling performance, headed into his own net.

"They took it took it to them and put on absolute football masterclass," said Hurren speaking after the win and his first home match in charge.

"We're getting to know these players, and the players are getting to know how we work. Last Saturday with the environment, going to a team who were fourth in the league, away from home, it was tough and I asked the question 'can we deal with that?' And we did.

"So today was a different type of pressure, I wanted to see if they could back that up against a team who I believe is in a false position. I said to the guys, all that hard work you've done on Saturday, don't throw it away.

"I wanted to see the character, I wanted to see if they've got that within their belly and they and they have."

The Pitmen turn their attention to welcoming Wythenshawe Town on Saturday as they enjoy a series of three more home games during the next two weeks.

Asked if he could have wished for a better start, Hurren added: "No, but even if it hadn't gone this way, it's still a work in progress.

"These lads are new to each other it’s a new squad, a new ownership. Obviously, the fans have been here from day one, and they can see how it's developing.

"Even if it hadn’t gone that way, I am still immensely proud to manage this football club, and we just keep going."

Elsewhere, Kidderminster Harriers' eight-match unbeaten run came to an end as they were thrashed 4-0 by King's Lynn Town in National League North.

Jonny Margetts bagged a brace, while Joshua McCammon and Finlay Barnes were also on target for the Linnets, who moved one place above Harriers into fourth - though Phil Brown's men do have a game in hand.

Rushall Olympic slumped to the bottom of the table as they went down 1-0 at home to Brackley Town, while Needham Market moved above them with a 1-0 victory of their own at Leamington.

In the Birmingham Senior Cup second round, Darlaston Town lost 2-0 at Sutton Coldfield Town, while AFC Wulfrunians were beaten 3-2 by Racing Club Warwick despite a brace from Freddie Cockerell.

Wolves' trip to Boldmere St Michaels in the same competition was postponed.

And Mark Swann racked up his 100th win as Chasetown manager as the Scholars dispatched Uttoxeter Town 5-2 in the second round of the Staffordshire Senior Cup.

A Kieran Fenton double had Chasetown 2-0 up inside 10 minutes, with Oli Hayward, Alfie Taylor and Danny O'Callaghan netting after the break.
