Women's football round-up: Wolves cruise into the next round of the FA Cup
Wolves are through to the Women's FA Cup third round after thrashing fellow National League North side Sporting Khalsa 8-1.
Amber Hughes and Destiney Toussaint scored braces, while Charlotte Greengrass, Jade Cross, Ania Denham and Beth Merrick added to the tally which means Wolves play Shrewsbury Town in the next round. Laura Smith netted a late consolation for Khalsa.
The result adds to a five-game unbeaten streak in which they’ve scored 39 goals and conceded only three.
Manager Dan McNamara said: “It’s great to see, especially heading into what will be three tough games now.
“We’ve got to keep working, keep striving to be better and hopefully the goals will keep coming.
“The good part is everybody in the 18 named today got at least 30 minutes in them.
“That is something that is really good for us going into the bigger games in the next few weeks.
“They look strong, they look sharp.
“For me it’s all about consistency, we want to keep the train rolling, you can’t chop and change too much because we want to keep the ball rolling.”
West Brom are also through to the third round after putting away Worcester City 6-0. They face the winner of the match between FC St Helens and Cheadle Town Stingers.
Rhianne Oakley got a hat-trick against the fourth-tier visitors, alongside goals from Simran Jhamat, Marli Rhodes and Ella Haughey.
Stourbridge are away to West Midlands Premier Division side Kidderminster Harriers midweek in the second round, with the winner hosting Blackburn Rovers.
Birmingham City were drawn at home to Women’s Championship title-rivals Durham, who are level on points with Blues in second.
It comes after Birmingham got their first League Cup win at the weekend against Bristol City. Lily Agg and Simone Magill scored early, before Magill made a brace before the break.
Aston Villa lost in the League Cup 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur. Robert De Pauw made eight changes to his line-up after their 3-2 win against Crystal Palace in the Women’s Super League.
Villa are now second in their group and three points behind Tottenham, with their last group fixture against Charlton now becoming make or break.
Lye Town fought for a 3-3 draw away to midtable Alvechurch, as Chloe Handy scored a brace to accompany an Alvechurch own goal.
Their next match is the reverse West Midlands League Premier Division fixture, as Lye host Alvechurch on Sunday. The hosts remain six points away from table-topping Shifnal Town, but are now level on points with Harriers.
Halesowen Town suffered their first defeat of the Division One South season as they fell 6-3 to Droitwich Spa, despite a brace from Bethney Taylor and a goal from Sydney Harris.
Crusaders are two points behind league-leaders Halesowen and next play mid-table Worcester City.
In Division One North, Lichfield City went third as they beat Tamworth 6-0. Goals from Loren Cooper and Courtney Dilger, and braces from Shelbie Cartwright and Saddiqa Shan mean City are now six points off the top.
