The next 12 months will decide the future of one of British boxing’s most exciting fighters, writes Matt Bozeat.

Sam Eggington admits the clock is ticking on his thrill-a-second boxing career that relaunches on the Excelsior Sporting Club in Cannock on Thursday, November 28.

The 31-year-old from Stourbridge is set to fight over six rounds in Bar Sport’s Premier Suite.

The Midlands Area super-middleweight title clash between Hereford’s Liam O’Hare and Ollie Cooper from Cannock tops the bill and Eggington hopes victory there will lead to a big fight in Canada in the new year.

‘The Savage’ admits he thought about retiring after losing a majority points decision to Abass Baraou for the vacant European super-welterweight championship in March. He got a job working in house clearances before having a rethink.

And Eggington, the former British, Commonwealth, European and IBO world champion, goes into this month’s fight admitting: “I know I haven’t got long left.

“Give me another year. I was 31 in October and I will give it until next October. We will see how I feel then. We will see if I’m still looking good.”

The news Eggington is set to carry on throwing punches is good news for fans.

Twice he has won the British Boxing Board of Control’s Fight-of-the-Year award, for his battles with Ted Cheeseman and Bilal Jkitou, and after 12 years as a professional, Eggington says he still has an appetite for fighting.

“I’m not just turning up to make the numbers up,” he said. “People know I have been around a long time, but I’m not getting injured all the time or feeling punches more than I used to.

“And I still always want an early night every time I fight! I never want to leave it to the judges.”
