Jason Welborn going back to the big stage

Rowley Regis' Jason Welborn is going back to the big time after securing a spot on a Sky Sports televised show on March 25.

He will support Anthony Crolla's WBA world lightweight title rematch against Jorge Linares at the Manchester Arena,

Welborn will get his own title tilt on the Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing promoted bill, too, as he goes after the WBC International Silver crown at middleweight.

The two-weight former Midlands champion will also be looking to make a dent in the unblemished record of opponent Marcus Morrison, who holds the belt.

The hometown hero, who will fight in front of his Manchester fans, has reeled off 14 wins from 14 professional contests with 10 stoppages.

Morrison has proved powerful with a host of early finishes, including seven in the first round, and is trained by Joe Gallagher.

The 23-year-old picked up the WBC International Silver strap by countout at the same venue, Brazilian Jefferson Luiz De Sousa succumbing to a body shot early into round two.

Welborn hasn't featured in front of the Sky Sports cameras since he valiantly went down on points to three-time world title challenger Matthew Macklin.

They clashed for another WBC International bauble at super welter in October 2015 that went the full 10 rounds, despite some expecting Welborn to be cannon fodder.

There was no more than three rounds in Macklin's victory with all three judges, after a cracker that entertained Birmingham's Barclaycard Arena under the Matchroom banner.

Welborn has since lost his Midlands super welter honours to Craig Cunningham and joined up with Macklin, signing up with his MTK Birmingham stable.

The 30-year-old, now in his 11th year as a pro, has also challenged for the British title at welter and super welter. He has 20 wins (seven TKOs) and six losses (three TKO) from 26 bouts.

His first tilt ended in seven to Frankie Gavin at welter, while he complained of low blows throughout before future WBA world super welter champion Liam Smith halted him in six.

A first title fight at middleweight now awaits him, as part of the same line-up where his desired target Brian Rose takes on Jack Arnfield.

Rose asked for Welborn, who declined as his partner was due to give birth, as an opponent last year and the two have traded vocal barbs on Twitter since.
