Hughes and Williams went to a deciding set and all the way through to the last available leg with both missing match doubles, before the victor took his chance to come out on top 3-2.

It was 'Yozza' who took the last throw of the match to progress through after a hard-fought contest against the Welshman, writes Craig Birch.

The Black Country thrower is back in singles action after reaching the last 16 of the Grand Slam of Darts, on his debut, at Wolverhampton Civic Hall last month.

It was three-leg sets action in a first-to-three race again for his second test at Lakeside, which is hosting this year's Masters as well as the World Championship.

Hughes was not as pushed against Robson, a three-time Masters quarter-finalist, as he got across the line 3-1.

Play will be upgraded to best-of-seven sets in Frimley Green tomorrow, as the final day will determine the 2016 title winner.

Hughes, now the BDO No 3, first made his name two years ago as an unknown with a run all the way to the final of the Masters, losing 7-3 to Martin Phillips.
