Wolverhampton's Wayne Jones whitewashed three-time world champion John Part to storm into the second round of the PDC Players Championship.

But 'the Wanderer' was denied an all-West Midlands clash with Rugeley's Mark Hylton in the second round on Saturday, after 'Mile High' went out at the first hurdle in a 6-3 defeat to Mark Walsh.

Jones now faces Walsh, a semi-finalist at the Grand Slam in Wolverhampton last month, in the next phase of the four-day long tournament at the Doncaster Dome.

Walsh beat Jones 6-5 in the first round of July's European Championships, where the Black Country favourite chucked it away from a 5-4 lead.

But there was no chance of that last night at the Doncaster Dome against Part, who has won one BDO and two PDC world titles.

Jones got ahead and never looked back, denying the Canadian a dart at the double in a blistering start to go 4-0 up, then holding firm under pressure to record the opening night's only shut-out, 6-0.

He said: "I am really pleased with that. I started off brilliantly and managed to keep it going.

"I think if John had got a leg on the board it would have got me worried and I was just glad to finish him off in the end."

Jones hit a 180 in taking the opening leg on double 16 for a 13-dart finish, then followed with another maximum by taking out 121 in the second for a 12-darter.

Double 16 gave him the third in 14 darts with double two winning the fourth on double two, three tons and a 140 score pushing him far enough ahead to afford two earlier missed doubles.

Part hit a 180 to be first to a finish in the fifth leg, but wasted six darts at a double as Jones took out double 16 once more, before two misses at double 11 from the Canadian gave him a shot at 81.

Jones then scored a perfect 81 to seal victory, taking the win with a last dart at the bull.

But Hylton tasted defeat in the second match of the evening as the in-form Walsh moved onto a showdown with Jones in the second round.

Hylton never recovered from the early running of Walsh, who raced into a 3-0 lead, punishing four missed doubles from the left-hander in the second leg and landing a 180 and a 96 finish in the third.

A fight back appeared on at the break after Hylton won back-to-back legs to pull it back to 3-2, taking the fourth leg on tops and landing another maximum and double eight to close the deficit.

Walsh had been made to pay for three misses on the wire of double 12 but did manage to land double 12 in the next and defied a 180 to move into a 5-2 advantage.

Hylton stepped in following three missed double tops from Walsh for the match in the eighth leg, landing double ten to keep the game alive.

But Walsh not to be denied, taking the deciding leg in 14 darts, taking out 64 on tops.
