Roland Scholten meets his match
It was the moment a security guard from Wednesfield will never forget after defeating world-rated darts star Roland Scholten at the Cleveland Arms pub.
It was the moment a security guard from Wednesfield will never forget after defeating world-rated darts star Roland Scholten at Wolverhampton's Cleveland Arms pub.
Scholten was part of the 'Dutch Invasion' darts exhibition that descended on Wolverhampton last night along with former world champion Jelle Klassen, Michael van Gerwen and Co Stompe.
Both Klassen and van Gerwen are record breakers, the youngest world champion in darts history and the youngest player to win a major televised tournament respectively.
The rest of the quartet, Scholten and Stompe, have also reached the BDO world championship semi-finals and PDC quarter-finals during their careers.
But Scholten met his match in Mick Noakes, who became the only one of the 16 punters, drawn at random to play a leg against one of the famous four, to beat their illustrious counterpart.
And Noakes was millimetres away from a finish the pros would have been proud of after nearly winning the leg with a maximum checkout of 170.
The 51-year-old hit treble 20 twice and went for the bull, but just miscued his arrow which sailed into 10 below.
However, Scholten failed to capitalise and left the door open in failing to check out with his three darts.
Noakes did hit 20 rather than double top in reply, but made up for it with a double 10 to cap a memorable win against the former UK Open champion, rated number 43 in the world.
