LETTER: Action needed to help strengthen Wolves squad

Like Mr Williams of Worsley (January 12) I have supported Wolves for 60 years and share his concerns about recent recruitment. Certainly the 2020/21 team is, in my view, weaker than the teams of the previous two seasons.

Given Nuno’s preference for working with a small squad, which I fully understand, we have always been just an injury or two away from the serious problem which we now have. The long term injuries to Jonny and in particular Jiminez together with other injuries, the loss of form of some players, particularly in mid-field, due no doubt in the main to the lack of a summer break and a truncated pre-season, and the failure to adequately replace the goals lost with the sales of Docherty and Jota mean that we are unlikely to match, let alone improve on, the league positions of the last two seasons which will mean a further season without European competition which will itself impact on recruitment come next summer.

I fail to understand why when letting Cutrone move to Fiorentina last January we did so without securing an adequate replacement to provide support and competition for Jimenez. Whatever Fabio Silva’s promise he is clearly not ready for the Premier League.

In the current circumstances both in respect of the team’s weaknesses and the effect the pandemic and Brexit will have on the transfer market the recall of Cutrone was a no brainer and it is now down to him to prove that he has the ability to fill the void. However, Cutrone himself is not enough, strikers thrive on competition therefore we need to bring in a further striker of proven quality. Diego Costa is the obvious solution. I accept that his salary demands are likely to be excessive but a six month contract on reasonable terms might appeal to him with a view to either earning a permanent contract here or to show other top teams that he has still got what it takes. Cannot Jorge Mendes use his undoubted powers of persuasion to bring that about? After all, as Mr Williams suggests, he has done very nicely out of Wolves in terms of fees earned in respect of both players brought to the club and those he has moved on.
