LETTER: Lost confidence in beloved Wolves
A reader discusses Wolverhampton Wanderers.
As a Wolves supporter of over 60 years standing (most of it literally, on the old south bank) I have, like all Wolves fans, thoroughly enjoyed the last three seasons since Nuno came to town and whoever or wherever Wolves have played, I have always felt confident they would get something from every game. But no longer. Why?
Setting aside the iniquitous and infuriating VAR which has robbed Wolves numerous times this season and the lengthy absence of several key players due to injury which has led to inconsistency and tepid performances, the issue which is currently causing me concern is that of recruitment. I concede that if we compare Wolves' resources and financial backing with those of, for example, our neighbours Sandwell Town, then we should certainly be grateful for what we have and for our position of relative safety in the Premier League. However, when we consider the departures from the club this season and the temporary loss of injured players, there is no doubt in my mind that their replacements are simply not good enough to go straight into the first team and to maintain the necessary standard.
Performances from three or four players in the recent Brighton fixture were totally inadequate. Yes, they were only 18 or 19 years of age and Nuno insists that he has faith in them, but I was as good as them when I was eighteen and I only played for The Leopard Select in Kingswinford - and I was wearing glasses! And these are players for whom Wolves have forked out tens of millions of pounds.
My serious point here is that I am beginning to wonder if clubs and agents, knowing that Wolves have a few quid behind them are inflating transfer fees and commissions whilst serving up seriously sub-standard personnel. I would like to know just how many players recruited this season were personally vetted by Nuno or his immediate staff and how many were signed on the recommendation of agents sitting on big fat commissions? Whatever the answer, I fervently hope Wolves have both recovered and recruited before next weekend or the unthinkable could happen. Allardyce is going to win one eventually.
