LETTER: Airport testing key to our recovery

Our second lockdown came as a hammer blow to local business across the West Midlands and has devastated aviation and Birmingham Airport trade. Half of Britain’s exports to non-European markets go by air. Meanwhile we are losing a huge share of £457million a day from lost revenue from visitors and business links.
It is vital Birmingham Airport works with government and international partners to implement airport testing for air travellers. This would ensure public safety and would facilitate the creation of accessible travel ‘air bridges’ to other countries.
Birmingham Airport is currently falling behind Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt and risking jobs, business and future growth opportunities. Airport testing at Birmingham Airport cannot be delayed any further.
We are facing unprecedented challenges from Covid-19. Birmingham Airport must not fall behind or fail in their responsibilities and world reach, or as our gateway to access new opportunities.
