LETTER: Our children deserve better

A reader questions the decision not to re-open state schools.

I am disgusted with Boris Johnson’s failure to reopen state schools. I am sure boarding school pupils are benefitting from more quality time spent with their parents, have laptops and are in receipt of hours of distance learning but state school pupils are being short changed. In another era that would have been me, or my children or even my grandchildren.

My state school education gave me a good start in life and imbued me with a lifelong love of learning. I am appalled that this man has put no measures in place to ensure that the majority of children in this nation stay engaged with education and do not fall further behind those whose parents can afford private schooling. The ‘kids’ - as he called them - deserve and need better than this.
