LETTER: Health of players must come first
A reader believes the health of football players is the most important aspect ahead of a proposed return to action.
The Premier League wants clubs to complete their fixtures for this season behind closed doors, to avoid the danger of spreading coronavirus among spectators. I am grateful for their concern, but what about my players? What guarantee can the PFL give that the coronavirus won’t spread to them?
The collective will and the thanks of the nation have encouraged willing health and care workers to risk infection. Personal Protective Equipment has been provided for front-line workers, and social distancing has limited the risk for the rest of us.
My boys can’t wear PPE while competing in the last few games. I doubt if social distancing will work. They will be putting their lives at risk for what? Our entertainment? I am more than willing to forego that, for now.
My team has already given me fantastic entertainment this season. Thanks to the lockdown, and the club website, I have had the chance to relive memories of great games such as the amazing victory over Manchester City at Molineux. I don’t want such superb examples of team effort and skill to be put at risk in order to fulfil TV contracts or to satisfy the egos of ‘the suits’.
Leave our boys out of it. They are too precious. Health must come first. Wealth second. Toss a coin if necessary to decide the league table, or hold penalty shoot-outs, but don’t harm the Molineux ‘family’!
