During the Spanish Civil War in 1936, a rebel general declared that when his four columns of troops attacked Madrid, they would be joined by another column of sympathisers. Thus was born the expression “fifth column.” 

I was reminded of the general when Donald Trump's son breezed into Greenland a few days ago (“We're just here as tourists.”) and was rapturously welcomed by Greenlanders wearing Trump's MAGA caps.

The European Union says it will resist any moves by the United States to take over Greenland. The pledge from Brussels will presumably be made in French and the Yanks will presumably respond in the same language to the threat of resistance: “Vous, et quelle armée ? (You and whose army?).
