Until July 4 this year, the Labour Party was also in the business of promising the earth. Then, a few days after the general election, it announced with much surprise that the financial black hole left by the Tories was so enormous that the sunlit uplands would be put on hold for a while. 

Can't you just see the new President Trump announcing to a breathless world: “Sure I was gonna fix the war in a day but when I saw the mess you guys left it in . . .” We might call it the Reeves Gambit.

Good to see Rod Stewart, now in his 80th year, will be taking the Legends slot at Glastonbury 2025.
