Express & Star comment: Finn’s Law thug has time to reflect
The knife-wielding thug who stabbed a police dog will have plenty of time to reflect on his actions as he languishes behind bars over the next 21 months.
He’ll be able to consider whether cruelty to animals is acceptable, whether it’s wise to carry a blade and whether taking drugs is the best way for him to spend his life.
Moreover, police forces around the UK will take heart that Finn’s Law has been enacted and that they can now go about their business safe in the knowledge that those who transgress will feel the full weight of the law.
Make no mistake, the fact that Finn’s Law has been used for the first time will serve as a deterrent to some.
It will be enough to make some people think twice, which in itself will help to protect serving police animals.
It is beyond comprehension that people see fit to injure animals who are in the line of duty.
And we can be satisfied that the police now have greater powers to punish offenders.
Law and order must work for the many to keep our communities safe from harm.
Fearless dogs do precisely that and must also be protected.
