Star comment: Nunes family feel rightly aggrieved

It is easy to forget that at the heart of the Kevin Nunes scandal is an unsolved murder and a family still grieving.

That family has maintained a dignified silence for more than five years.

They have waited patiently for the truth about what went wrong and why five men previously jailed for killing the promising footballer were later cleared.

They must be given those answers, even if they make for uncomfortable reading for Staffordshire Police. For nearly three of those five years, Kevin Nunes’ relatives have been waiting for the findings of the detailed investigation, into how detectives botched the murder case, to be made public.

Today, his relatives express their upset that this delay has caused them.

They say they have lost confidence and hope in the system which is meant to hold the police to account, provide them with answers, and ultimately deliver justice if necessary.

They have every right to be aggrieved. Operation Kalmia, as it is known, has been nothing short of a fiasco.

As the old adage goes, justice delayed is justice denied.
