Star comment: Find time to fit in a little exercise

At a time when people are increasingly concerned about obesity and not enough of us take regular exercise it is pleasing to note that the Wyre Forest district is staging a Big Active Weekend this Saturday(May 20) and Sunday.

People from across the Wyre Forest District are being urged to get their pulses racing by getting taking part in various exercise being offered at local sports clubs and leisure facilities as well as community venues.

Organised by Wyre Forest District Council, Worcestershire County Council and local groups, the weekend will see a wide range of different activities being offered for people of all ages and abilities.

Whether people have a preference for walking, cycling, climbing, yoga or dodge-ball, the weekend will be the opportunity to try these activities.

Many are being staged outdoors in the Wyre Forest landscape and others will be located in leisure facilities and community venues.

Officials say that there are big physical health andmental wellbeing benefits from taking part in the event with health chiefs currently recommending that adults undertake 2.5 hours of moderate activity each week in bouts of ten minutes or more.

People who have a physically active lifestyle also have a 20 to 35 per cent lower risk of cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease and stroke compared to those who have a sedentary lifestyle.
