The central government has told all councils responsible for road maintenance to get on with fixing the country’s potholes.

From June 30 2025, all councils must publish how much is spent on the roads, how many potholes are fixed and the condition of the roads.

The government has promised an extra £500 million for highway maintenance over the coming year, but if councils do not set out how they are using the funds, a quarter of it could be withheld.

Walsall Council maintains 525 miles of road network across the borough, and it says the total cost required to carry out its 2025/26 maintenance plan is £3 million.

The programme is split into two parts, with £2m spent on resurfacing roads and footways and the remaining £1m spent on preventative maintenance of roads and footways.

“This is proving to be beneficial and maintenance techniques at the right locations help the council keep its roads in good condition, benefiting residents, businesses and visitors to the borough.

“Every pothole reported to the council is assessed based upon the risk to road users. A priority timescale is then set for each repair, and our teams work hard to fix them as quickly as possible.

“Our structural and preventative programmes for the coming year are in place and can be found on the council’s website.”
