Train line between Birmingham and Lichfield blocked after lorry hits bridge

The railway line between Birmingham and Lichfield has closed after a lorry struck a bridge.

Posting on its official X account, formerly Twitter, West Midlands Railways said the strike happened today (Friday, December 3) between Birmingham New Street and Lichfield Trent Valley.

As a result the line is blocked and tickets are being accepted with National Express West Midlands between New Street and Sutton Coldfield, while road transport has been ordered between Lichfield and Sutton Coldfield. 

Passengers heading to Lichfield from Birmingham can get a bus from outside the main entrance of New Street - near TK Maxx - to get them to Sutton Coldfield, from where replacement buses have been ordered to take passengers the rest of the way.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Railway said: "Bridge strike between Birmingham New Street and Lichfield Trent Valley.

"Due to this incident, the line is blocked. 

"Tickets acceptance with National Express West Midlands between New Street and Sutton Coldfield.

"Road transport ordered between Lichfield TV and Sutton Coldfield."

The incident took place in Erdington, Birmingham, where a lorry hit a bridge, with emergency services said to be at the scene.

Posting to its Birmingham New Street page on X, National Rail wrote just after 12pm: "Cross City line services between Birmingham New Street and Lichfield are currently suspended as a lorry has hit a bridge in Erdington.

"We’re on site with emergency services and examining the bridge to check it’s safe before it reopens."
