A spokesman for West Midlands Police said the closures were put in place due to concerns for a woman's safety.

In a statement at about 6pm, he said: "We have closed the M5 at Junction 1 due to concerns for the safety of a woman.

"Officers are at the scene and motorists are advised to take alternate routes for the time being.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed crews were not called to the incident.

There was around four miles of congestion on the busy motorway on Thursday afternoon, with motorists facing long delays.

At about 6.40pm, National Highways said the M5 North to the M6 North and the M6 South to the M5 South link roads had reopened.

It however warned of 60 minute delays on the northbound M5 on approach to the M6 and advised motorists take extra time to travel.
