National Highways shut the A5 between M6 Toll and A4601 near Cannock at around 11.40am.

The agency said the closure was "due to an infrastructure defect".

A spokesperson said the issue was with a drain.

"A pothole has appeared around the drain and manhole cover," they said.

Severn Trent and National Highways teams are on the scene, with the water firm "carrying out temporary repairs to make it safe".

The road was reopened by 3.30pm.

Severn Trent has been approached for comment.
