The fatal collision took place on Eastbound stretch of the motorway between Junctions 2 and 1, near Tewkesbury, at around 10.50am on Thursday.

Two paramedic officers, a Midlands Air Ambulance and the West Midlands Ambulance Service Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) rushed to the scene.

Upon arrival, ambulance crew discovered one of the lorry drivers, a 32-year-old man, in critical condition.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "Medics immediately began administering advanced life support but sadly, despite everyone’s best efforts, it quickly became clear that he could not be saved and was confirmed dead at the scene.

“There were no other patients."

West Mercia Police is appealing for witnesses of the crash to come forward.

A 47-year-old man, the driver of the second lorry involved in the crash, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has since been released on bail whilst police continue with their enquiries.

Insp Steph Arrowsmith, said: “I would like to recognise and thank the public for their understanding and co-operation yesterday as we carried out our initial investigation into the collision.

“Due to the complexity of the load shed from one of the vehicles following the collision this did cause long delays for other road users, as we cleared the carriageway and made the area safe.

“I would also like to thank our colleagues from other emergency services and agencies for their support."
