The trio of HGVs and single car crashed on the northbound carriageway between Junction 13 (Dunston Interchange) and Junction 14 (Stafford) at around 1pm, leading to traffic being stopped on both carriageways.

National Highways said two tankers were stranded at the scene for some time afterwards "awaiting recovery due to substantial damage".

A spokesman said: "Fortunately the most severely damaged tanker is unladen, the other was carrying vegetable oil.

"There has been an oil spill from one of the LGVs which has been treated but requires further work at scene."

An image showed the three lorries, including two tankers, stranded in the third and fourth lanes of the motorway.

Emergency services were also on the scene.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called to reports of a collision involving three lorries and a car on the northbound M6 between junctions 13 and 14 at 12.55pm today. One ambulance and a paramedic officer attended the scene.

"On arrival we discovered one patient, a man, who was one of the lorry drivers. He was treated for minor injuries before being discharged at the scene."

Shortly after 2pm, National Highways said two lanes remained closed heading north but all southbound lanes were open again.

However, delays were 90 minutes heading north and 60 minutes southbound.

Four hours later, the agency said lane four was the only one heading north that remained shut, however there were seven miles of queues causing delays of 90 minutes.
