Road closures as Queen's Baton Relay heads to Black Country

It's here! The Queen's Baton has spent the weekend in the Black Country and Staffordshire, and here's what you need to know ahead of its final day in the region.

After visiting Kidderminster, Rugeley and Walsall on Saturday, the relay took it to Wolverhampton, Halesowen, Stourbridge, Dudley and Brierley Hill on Sunday, as the baton continues to get ever closer to its final destination of Birmingham.

It will have been carried over 294 days, and made trips to each of the 72 nations that make up the Commonwealth, by the end of the final mile.

The baton has been carried across Africa, Asia, South America and Oceania ahead in recent months ahead of the games, which start in Birmingham on July 28.

Here's what will be happening on Monday, when the baton is taken across Sandwell:

Oldbury Baton Relay route:

Kicking off the journey on Simpson Street, the baton bearers start at 8.10am and will make its way to Sandwell Council House down Century Road. Straight after that, the celebrations will begin. The Commonwealth Games mascot, Perry, will join in the fun and is eager to take selfies with his fans...

Sandwell libraries will be bringing fun crafty activities and storytelling to the celebrations.

These are the roads that will be closed between 7am and 9am on the day:

  • Freeth Street

  • Church Street

  • Bromford Road

  • Broadwell Road

  • McKean Road

  • Simpson Street

  • Birmingham Street

Wednesbury Baton Relay route:

Performances by children and young people from the community will welcome the baton into Brunswick Park between 8.30am and 11am, with the baton bearers arriving at 9.24am.

They will start their journey in the town centre, then make their way to Brunswick Park via High Bullen and Brunswick Park Road. Exciting exhibitions and a family production will be waiting to entertain visitors.

From 8am to 10am, these roads will be closed in Wednesbury:

  • High Bullen

  • Walsall Street

  • Brunswick Park Road

Tipton Baton Relay route:

Sporty celebrations – and Perry the Bull – await at Victoria Park, with cheerleading, netball and gymnastics sessions as well as a boxing and karate showcase.

If that wasn't enough, you can look forward to fairground rides have a go at traditional games from the Commonwealth.

The baton itself will be in Tipton from 11.02am to 11.39am, starting its journey in Owen Street and marching on to Victoria Park through Queens Road.

The following roads will be closed between 10am and 12.30pm:

  • Albion Street

  • Union Street

  • Waterloo Street

  • Queens Road

  • High Street

Cradley Heath and Rowley Regis Baton Relay route:

Between 11am and 2pm, there will be music from steel drums, games, stories and tasty bites at Haden Hill House and park that are sure to keep the buzz alive, with activities happening inside the house too.

The baton will make its entrance in Rowley Regis at 12.20pm, staying until 1.39pm. It will set off from Cradley Heath High Street and make its way down Barrs Road, Haden Hill Park and Waterfall Lane, finally reaching Blackheath High Street.

Here are the roads that will be closed between 11am to 1.30pm in Cradley Heath, and from 12pm to 2.30pm in Rowley Regis:

  • Grainger's Lane

  • Corngreave

  • Barrs Road

  • Lee Road

  • High Street, Rowley Regis

  • Holly Street

  • Waterfall Lane

  • Beauty Bank

  • Barrs Road

Bearwood and Smethwick Baton Relay route:

Animals from Forge Mill Farm will be joining the celebrations in Lightwoods Park, where there will also be bubble fun, stalls, tours and refreshments between 1pm and 4pm.

The long-awaited baton will be coming at 2.55pm until 4.24pm. It starts at Harborne Road and will travel through Lightwoods Park, Bearwood Road and past Victoria Park to the end of the Smethwick leg at the library on the High Street.

The following roads are set to be closed between 2pm and 5:30pm:

  • High Street

  • Bearwood Road

  • Lightwoods Hill

  • Adkins Lane

West Bromwich Baton Relay route:

Finally, ending the day on the perfect note, Sandwell Valley Showground will host live music, fire performances, stilt walkers, entertainers and many more activities between 4pm and 9pm.

The baton will start its final leg of the day on Spon Lane at around 5.36pm, making its way down Bull Street, Walsall Street and Reform Street, through Dartmouth Park, and ending at Sandwell Valley Country Park.

Between 4.30pm and 7.30pm, the following roads will be closed in West Bromwich:

  • Spon Lane

  • Bull Street

  • Walsall Street

  • Reform Street
