Calls for action on busy main road before risk of further ‘deterioration’
A councillor is calling for a stretch of one of the county's busiest main roads to be resurfaced.
Councillor Christian Lea said it was "about time" Shropshire Council resurfaced the A442 from Bridgnorth to Telford rather than carry out continuous patching works.
The Bridgnorth East and Astley Abbotts representative on Shropshire Council said the half-mile stretch from the entrance to Severn Park to Fort Pendlestone was in particular need of attention.
The road, which is used by many on their daily commutes between Telford and Bridgnorth, is also used frequently by HGVs.
A response to Councillor Lea's concerns from Shropshire Council said the road had been noted as an "area of concern" and that it had been included in the 2021/22 works programme, subject to budget constraints.
Councillor Lea said: "The A442 is one of the busiest stretches of road in the county, particularly the stretch of it which runs from Bridgnorth to Telford.
"A tremendous amount of HGV’s use this route as a means of connecting to not just Telford, but also the M54 and other routes into Mid and North Wales.
'Necessary'
"Many local residents work in Telford and commute along this route on a daily basis, making it the most heavily travelled route out of Bridgnorth.
"With Shropshire Council not having undertaken any resurfacing work on this stretch of road, it is about time that the necessary work is undertaken before the road surface deteriorates any further.
"I really do hope that Shropshire Council listens to my concerns and does something about the state of the road surface over the coming months.”
Councillor Lea added that additional parts of the carriageway, near the River Worfe bridge, were also in need of repairs.
"In an ideal world it could do with resurfacing up to the turning for the hamlet of Bromley, but the very bad patch is from Severn Park out to Fort Pendlestone," he said.
"The council over the past few years has been patching up the road. It's very ridged and potholes form again before you know it."
