A diversion was put in place and traffic officers remained on the scene this afternoon.

A Highways England spokesperson said: “The southbound carriageway of the M6 around junction 10 is closed after reports of a car on fire at 11.45am this morning.

“An up-and-over diversion is in place with traffic using the exit and entry slips at the junction to divert around the scene.

“The carriageway will remain closed until it is safe to reopen, and at the moment, we advise drivers to plan ahead and allow extra time for travel while the scene is being cleared.”

There was approximately 3.5 miles of congestion on approach and drivers were advised they should add an extra 30 minutes on to their journey time.

Traffic was being diverted via exit and entry slip roads at Junction 10.

The junction reopened at approximately 1.20pm.

A Highways England Spokesperson said: "We can confirm the carriageway has now been cleared and all lanes back open."
