Police probe as serious crash shuts M6 for six hours

A man was seriously injured in a crash which closed the M6 for more than six hours.

Up to four vehicles were involved in the collision which happened near Spaghetti Junction.

Police have arrested a 19-year-old man as the investigation into the crash continues.

The motorway was partially closed for up to seven hours while the damaged vehicles were cleared.

Emergency services were called at around 4.40am on Friday to the crash northbound between junction 5 for Castle Bromwich and 6 for the Aston Expressway.

Two injured men were found when ambulance crews arrived.

One man, aged 25, was out of his vehicle and was already receiving treatment from the police.

An ambulance service spokesman said the man was in a serious condition.

He was taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment.

The second man was helped from his car and taken to Heartlands Hospital.

His injuries are not believed to be serious.

Motorists faced delays of around 30 minutes with up to six miles of queues.

Two lanes of the M42 were also closed at the link with the M6.

Motorists making their way through Birmingham and into the Black Country were advised to find alternative routes.

Traffic was being taken off the motorway at junction 4 at Coleshill.

The motorways were beginning to reopen from 11am.
