Tailbacks of traffic stretched back in both directions from the emergency work being carried on the barriers on the motorway between the Telford Town Centre and Ketley roundabouts.

And there was gridlock on roads around the M54 as drivers tried to find ways around the congestion.

Morning commuters faced long delays on their way to work.

The queues were longer eastbound with vehicles at a standstill approaching the start of the motorway before the Wellington junction.

Roads going to and from the M54 were choked as the holdups backed up across the Telford area.

The delays were caused because the fast lanes of the M54 in both directions were closed for the barrier repairs.

In a tweet Telford and Wrekin Council said: "We are aware of emergency works on the M54 causing a few areas to be busier than normal this morning. There has also been an incident on the A442 at Hollinswood but this now appears to be clearing."

The emergency repairs are believed to have been caused by a lorry colliding with a barrier on Monday evening.
