Birmingham New Street station voted one one of country’s best
Birmingham New Street has been named as one of the best railway stations in the country, according to a passenger survey.
The station was ranked third overall and the most popular outside London, as 92 per cent of passengers said they were satisfied with it.
New Street is one of the busiest stations in the country and a key intersection for services heading north and south. It underwent a £500 million redevelopment in 2015.
At the other end of the scale, Glasgow Queen Street was the most unpopular station, receiving just a 58 per cent approval rating. That was followed by the station at Gatwick Airport, with 66 per cent, which one passenger described as an 'appalling welcome to the UK'.
London's King's Cross was the most popular overall, with 96 per cent of passengers saying they were satisfied with the station, closely followed by London St Pancras with 95 per cent.
The four top-ranked stations have all undergone major refurbishments in recent years and West Midlands Mayor Andy Street said he hoped to see more of the region's stations in the top 10 before long.
Wolverhampton's station is to be rebuilt as part of a huge modernisation project.
The mayor said on Twitter: "Delighted to see @NetworkRailBHM ranked so high, a testament to the rebuild and the staff there. With major transformations on the way at Coventry, Wolverhampton and Birmingham International, let’s see if we can’t dominate the top 10 before long."
